North Luffenham Airfield

As RAF Barkston Heath is not available for the last two Free Flight Area Centralised Meetings of the year, they are being held at the ex RAF base of North Luffenham near Rutland Water which is now occupied by the Army.

Below are three maps which will help you arrive at the correct destination.

My route normally takes me through Melton Mowbray out onto the A606, through Oakham on the A6003, once past the tip of Rutland Water the North Luffenham base is signposted (to the left).

The road takes you into the village of Edith Weston (see below).

Once at the village of Edith Weston the main road takes a sharp turn to the right, at that point take the left turn, then 50 yds later turn right.

The road, indicated in red, takes you directly onto the disused airfield.

If you arrive at the main gate on the main road you have gone too far !

North Luffenham is used for Army manoeuvres - expect to see old British jets painted in mock Soviet colours, large bomb craters in the runways, piles of bombs (inert) and numerous spent bullet casings around the airfield.
